Where most six-month plans fail
- Section underestimation. FAR consistently takes more hours than the planning estimate suggests, often 130 to 150 hours instead of 100. Candidates who scheduled FAR for six weeks at sixteen hours per week often find themselves at week six with significant material left to cover.
- Life events. Six months is long enough that something usually happens. A family illness, a work crisis, a wedding, a move. Candidates who built no slack into the schedule lose two to three weeks to one of these events and never recover the pace.
- Holiday creep. A six-month plan starting in October hits Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year inside the first three months. Most candidates lose ten to fifteen study hours each holiday week. That is forty-five hours of unscheduled deficit across the holiday season, which is half a section's worth of study.
- Retake reality. The average candidate fails one section across the four-section sequence. A retake adds three to six weeks of additional study to re-prepare. A six-month plan with a retake becomes a seven-to-nine-month plan, which is fine if you planned for it.
A realistic six-month schedule
- Weeks 1-7: FAR. Roughly 120 hours of study including practice exams. Schedule the exam in week 8.
- Weeks 8-13: AUD. Roughly 80 hours. Schedule the exam in week 14.
- Weeks 14-19: REG. Roughly 100 hours. Schedule the exam in week 20.
- Weeks 20-25: Discipline section (BAR, TCP, or ISC). Roughly 80 hours. Schedule the exam in week 26.
- Week 26: Buffer week for retake or schedule slip.
