An Honest Review of Every Major CPA Review Course in 2026
A third-party take on Becker, UWorld, Surgent, Gleim, and NINJA. Where each course actually wins, where each one falls short, and the kind of candidate each one is genuinely right for.

Honest reviews in the CPA prep space are rare. Most "best CPA review course" rankings on the internet are published by people who sell exactly one of the courses or by sites that work backward from a predetermined winner. Both show up in the writing as suspiciously uniform praise, soft criticism, and conclusions that always point to the same provider.
This article does not promise to be free of all bias. What it does is lay out the strengths and weaknesses of five major providers side by side without working backward from a chosen winner. Meridian CPA Review, which is owned by the same entity that owns Atlas CPA Index, is excluded entirely from the comparison below. What follows is the honest take on the five providers Atlas has no ownership stake in, as of May 2026.
Becker: the industry standard with the matching price tag
Becker is the most recognized CPA review brand and the default for Big 4 staff. The course is well-built, the question bank is comprehensive at 8,000+ MCQs and 500+ TBS, the live class schedule is daily, and the Newt AI exam assistant is included at every tier (the only major provider that does that as of 2026). The Pro tier on the June 2026 promotion at $2,499 is a reasonable price for what is included, and the $1,000 Pass Guarantee on Pro and Pro+ is real and gets honored when the conditions are met.
The honest weakness is the price relative to outcome. At MSRP ($3,845 for Pro after the June 30 promo expires, up to $6,349 for Concierge), Becker costs three to five times what NINJA does for the same exam result. The "Becker Bump" marketing (the claim that Becker students pass at a 64% higher rate) is self-reported, applies only to students who hit Becker's "Exam Day Ready" thresholds, and would likely exist for any major provider whose students complete 80% of the course. Candidates whose employer is paying should take Becker without hesitation. Self-pay candidates who do not need live instruction or the brand signal usually overpay.

UWorld: the answer-explanation specialist
UWorld's strongest feature is the depth of its answer explanations. The platform writes the longest, deepest rationales of why each answer is right and why each wrong answer is wrong in the category. For visual learners and candidates who learn by working problems and reading the reasoning, this is the strongest pedagogical tool any major provider offers. The platform is well-designed, the mobile app is the best of the major providers, and the adaptive question selection within the question bank is solid.
Where UWorld falls short is the absence of live instruction. There are no scheduled live classes. The course is built around watching video lectures and working the question bank on your own schedule, with no human teacher in front of you. Candidates who need the structure of a calendar with someone walking through material in real time will struggle here. Pricing at $1,999 to $2,899 sits between Becker and the cheaper providers; it is not the cheapest option but it is competitive on cost-per-feature.
Surgent: the math-and-software pick
Surgent's adaptive learning engine is the strongest software-driven study planner in CPA review. Where most providers let you choose what to study, Surgent's technology identifies your weak areas through diagnostic questions and builds your study plan around them. Candidates who do well with software-driven learning and who do not want to manually plan a 400-hour study calendar tend to get more out of Surgent than out of any other provider. Pricing runs $799 (Essentials) to $1,299 (Premier Pass) to $1,699 (Ultimate Pass), which puts the upper Surgent tier at roughly half the cost of equivalent Becker tiers.
The honest critique is that Surgent's video lectures are noticeably less polished than Becker's or UWorld's. The instruction is competent but the production quality and instructor charisma are not the strengths of the course. Surgent works best for candidates who learn primarily by doing questions and getting feedback, and less well for candidates who learn primarily by watching lectures. Of all the providers, Surgent is the one most likely to be underrated relative to its price.
Gleim: the question bank specialist
Gleim has one of the largest CPA exam question banks in the category and has been in CPA review for 50 years, which shows in the depth of the content. Candidates who learn by sheer volume of practice problems get extensive practice with Gleim. The textbooks are thorough, the materials update frequently, and the company's longevity in the space is its strongest credibility signal. Pricing runs $2,499 (Traditional) to $2,999 (Premium) to $3,499 (Premium Pro) across packages, putting Gleim roughly between Becker Advantage and Becker Pro on price.
I think the honest weakness is that Gleim feels older than its competitors. The interface, the video lectures, and the overall study experience read closer to a traditional textbook-and-practice-problems course than to the polished software experiences UWorld and Becker offer. For candidates who specifically want that kind of dense, traditional study experience, Gleim delivers it. For candidates who expect a modern app-first study platform, the experience can feel dated.
NINJA: the cheapest reliable path
NINJA at $67 to $87 per month is the cheapest established CPA review course in this comparison by a wide margin. A candidate who studies for ten months pays roughly $800 total, which is one-third the cost of the cheapest Becker tier and less than half of UWorld. NINJA includes 8,000+ MCQs, 300+ task-based simulations, 300+ hours of video lectures, adaptive learning that targets your weak areas, and live instruction at the monthly price. A 7-day free trial with limited platform access lets candidates sample the course before paying, and the monthly pricing model means you pay only for the months you actually study.
NINJA still favors candidates who hold themselves to a calendar. There is no Pass Guarantee, no one-on-one tutoring program, and the live instruction schedule is lighter than Becker's daily LiveOnline cadence. Candidates who can self-direct an eight-to-twelve month study schedule do well with NINJA. Candidates who need a daily structured calendar to stay on track tend to drift, fall behind, and eventually pay for a more expensive course to recover the timeline. The cost savings only materialize if you actually finish the study plan with NINJA, not after you have already spent four months on it and then bought Becker anyway.
The three-provider shortlist
For most self-pay candidates, the realistic shortlist is three providers. UWorld is the strongest course in the category for candidates who learn from problem-solving and detailed answer explanations, at a price that is competitive without being premium. Surgent is the strongest pick for candidates who want adaptive software to drive the study plan, at the lowest price among full-featured providers. NINJA is the strongest pick for disciplined candidates with a tight budget who can self-direct their study plan.
Becker remains the right answer for candidates whose employer is paying, candidates targeting Big 4 firms, and candidates who specifically need daily live instruction. Gleim works well for the narrower group who want a traditional textbook-driven study experience. Outside of those specific fits, both Becker and Gleim are priced higher than the course actually returns in incremental pass-rate value.
